– 506 driving under the influence cases for the year
The Police Traffic Department has charged 3,965 people for various offences in two weeks, and 19,842 for the year.
According to a release, between September 08 to 22, 2014, police charged 981 for speeding, 346 for failing to confirm to sign; 266 for overloaded mini-buses; 55 for driving under the influence of alcohol; 36 for dangerous driving and 21 for careless driving.
For the year to date, police have charged 19,842 for various traffic offences. This included 506 for driving under the influence of alcohol; 15,083 for speeding; 1, 254 for use of cell phones; 365 for failing to adhere to siren; 938 for tinted vehicles; 1, 219 for failing to adhere to traffic light signals and 477 for private hire.
The release stated that since the re-opening of schools, the Department has resumed its Road Safety Education through road safety talks to schools, including The Bishops’ High, Rama Krishna Primary, JE Burnham Primary and Diamond Primary.
In addition, there is a Traffic Advisory Body in Georgetown whose primary objective is to assist the police in identifying traffic issues and finding solutions to deal with those issues. This body has recently donated “Stop children crossing” signs and reflectors to the Traffic Department.
There are also two Road Safety bodies in Berbice and one in Linden, while the other entities in the divisions are now being resuscitated.
“The Guyana Police Force takes this opportunity to remind the general public that road safety is everybody’s business, and to remember the five Cs: care, courtesy, caution, consideration and common sense when using the road.”
