great suppport of members today encouraged me to revisit that, and to be available for consideration as Captain another year,” a beaming, delighted Club Captain Chatterpaul ‘Chen’ Deo stated last Saturday at the conclusion of the Great Captain’s Golf tournament at the Lusignan Golf Club. Deo was the sole sponsor of this year’s Captain’s Tournament and to the members’ delight, in addition to the 12 trophies he provided, he also invested in a welcome light snack during the day’s play (at hole #8).
Nearly 50 players signed up for the tournament which was exciting and produced some notable scores.
Playing in four Flights, the 1st and 2nd places were won by the following players respectively: – 0–9 Flight – Alfred Mentore, h/cap 6, net 70 and Jetendra ‘Naro’ Dhanpat h/cap 8, net 73; 10–18 Flight – Bhowlaram Deo h/cap 16, net 69 and Fazil ‘That’s it’ Haniff h/cap 11, net 71; 19-28 Flight – Richard Haniff h/cap 25, net 61, and Club President, David Mohamad h/cap 21, net 65; Ladies Flight – Shanella Webster h/cap 24, net 68 and Christine Sukhram h/cap 9, net 78.
Other prizes were awarded to Fazil Haniff, for Nearest to The Pin; Lakeram ‘Tinko’ Ramsundar for the Longest Drive; Victor Todd for Most Honest Golfer; and Richard Haniff for Overall Best Net.
Ricard Haniff, son of Fazil ‘That’s It’ Haniff, received the Club Captain’s trophy for his overall best net of 61. Thus father and son received two trophies each on this memorable day!
On his part, winner of the Club Captain’s trophy, 31 year old Richard Haniff, who has only been playing golf since November last year, but was an avid cricket player for several years, was elated, stating; “I really began playing golf for 2 reasons, one for the exercise, and two for the fact that unlike cricket that always needs a group of persons to play, with golf you can practise the whole course alone. In addition I have been practising with some of the outstanding local players like Avinash, Gangully and Santo, (3 former Guyana Open winners). Then, like studying to be successful at school, I have been studying the game seriously – on youtube you can get all the different coaching sessions, then I keep watching the golf channel, I watch good local players and then I practice about three days each week! I have been playing just a few months, but the studying and practice were rewarding today.”
Club President, David Mohamad, who has been in the winning group often in recent months, congratulated the Captain for a well organised torunament and expressed appreciation for all those who turned out at the day’s tournament and for the great camaraderie that had been desired and realised. In response to members’ comment about the President’s Cup he responded, “The President’s Cup will be held later this year!” Of course this announcement received loud cheers as members now look forward to an even more spectacular Club President’s Cup later in the year.
