In support of the nation’s call for Local Government Elections, former Member of Parliament, Sandra Adams, and several others deemed her supporters, conducted a peaceful picketing exercise outside the Mayor and Town Council (M&TC)
office yesterday.
Former Councillor of the M&TC Harrilall Jainarine in his call for Local Government Elections (LGE) said, “we were selected in 2003 and I know that an IMC is just temporary and from 2003 to now is 11 years and I think that is high time we get LGE now, because we don’t have an elected Mayor and we don’t have elected councillors and we need LGE now.”
Jainarine claims that all the intelligent people they “came and met” have retired and some have been fired.
“We don’t have the competent people here and without them we cannot go forward to develop our Mayor and Town Council Administration.” He added that “most documents have to go to Georgetown to be signed when they could be signed right here. If the Government is incompetent to hold LGE, well then they are incompetent in handling the affairs of this country and they should resign and let the relevant people with the competence handle the affairs of Linden now. We need LGE now; we need our garbage to be properly managed.”
He said that the present system is not paying NIS for employees.
One former employee, Brenda Hinds, claims she worked with the Mayor and Town Council for nine years and three months and her NIS records have not been updated, thus preventing her from getting her pension.
“NIS only got one year paid for me, so me ent know wha’ happen to de other years, and in June dis year I get a letter from NIS telling me I could appeal.”
Chairman of the Upper Demerara Branch of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, Jermaine Figueira, showed his support by picketing.
“The teachers of the Region are in total support of the Opposition’s call for Local Government Elections. As teachers, who the President termed as ‘nation builders’, have a responsibility to the future leaders of this country, and it is very unfortunate that the ruling administration is deliberately denying a generation its constitutional right to participate in the decision-making process for their community development. As Educators it is our solemn duty to ensure that the liberties that our constitution provides are maintained and respected,” Figueira said.
