The first-ever Geriatric mega-clinic in West Berbice was held on Sunday and hosted by the
Berbice Regional Health Authority (BRHA) In collaboration with the Bush Lot Arya Samaj Mandir. The clinic, attended by hundreds, was held at the Mandir. Patients turned up from all across Region Five.
A team of 12 doctors from both Regions Five and Six, all specialized in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Care, tended to senior citizens.
A pharmacy was also established on site where medication was distributed. Reading glasses were also handed out. Patients also had access to a physiotherapist who performed hand and leg massages.
Beauticians were also on site, giving haircuts, manicures, pedicures and generally spruced-up the senior citizens. Pampers, bed-pans, walking- aids and commodes were also distributed.
There were health talks on various topics such as dieting and diabetes, food preparation, etc., while the patients were waiting to be seen by the doctors.
“We want to take this nationwide because we have an aging population and we need to take care of them,” an official from the BRHA added. “We want geriatric care to be adopted countrywide, because it comes to no additional cost, as the same doctors and nurses and student nurses volunteer their time and learn from what’s going on,” the official added.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the BRHA, Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, while delivering brief remarks, thanked the pandit and members of the Bush Lot Arya Samaj for allowing them to use the facility for the mega-clinic. He added that the reason why the BRHA utilizes faith-based organizations for the series of geriatric clinics in the past was because it is a collaborative effort. The Bush Lot Arya Samaj also provided volunteer staff for Sunday’s venture.
Dr. Mahadeo pledged to have his medical team have a closer watch on bed-ridden patients in Region Five, but this would be dependent on the information provided by the officials in that region.
“We will routinely visit that patient at home— and we will look at the patient and talk to the relatives— if the patient is in bed, we advise the relatives how to turn the patient, etc.,” Dr. Mahadeo added.
He underscored the importance of contributions that our senior citizens would have provided to this country in years past, and that it is only fitting that the health care system take care of the elderly.
“We are bringing this specialized care to you,” he added.
Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy also dropped by at the clinic and even had a haircut. Similar clinics were held in Number 69 Village, Corentyne; Port Mourant; Reliance, and Gay Park, where over 1,000 persons in total, ages 60 and over, were seen.
The next mega- clinic is planned for Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, in two weeks.
