Despite experiencing major setbacks for the regional season to date, Guyana’s Kevin Jeffrey and his hardworking TOP POWER RACING team of mechanics, headed by Brian Ten Pow is busy rebuilding the Mitsubishi Evolution 8’s engine which suffered damage during the first leg of the CMRC in Barbados.
Jeffrey, who is currently overseas, but expected to arrive in time to participate in this Sunday’s Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) ‘Race of Champions’ Meet, will be on the starting grid and fans can feel assured that the local champion of Group 4 will be pulling out all the stops as he uses this event to get valuable seat time ahead of the big showdown in the Caribbean Series set for November.
However, Kaieteur Sport took the time to interview the man who has been spearheading TOP POWER RACING for a number of years and who has been responsible for the machine’s dominant performances since Jeffrey acquired it from Jamaican Doug Gore a few years ago.
KN – How has preparations been going?
Ten Pow – in Barbados we had some issues with engine reliability which caused us a podium finish position. Since the car came back, we stripped the car down and took the chassis over to Infab to make some changes. Hopefully these changes will make the engine more reliable and able to deal the very fast Roger Mayers, Kristian Jeffrey, David Summerbel, Barry Mayers, Mark Maloney, Stewart Williams, Doug Gore just to name a few of the big guns come Round 3 CMRC in November.
KN – I know he had some problems in Barbados has those issues been rectified?
Ten Pow – The car is stripped down to almost a bare shell. We are in the process right now of rebuilding it, we are building an old engine and hopefully we will be able to get it back together by this weekend.
KN – What could fans expect come Sunday?
Ten Pow – Setting the South Dakota Circuit ablaze. Basically we are striving all the time to perfect the car to make it more reliable. More reliable to do what it does best, provide hair raising, mind blowing excitement for motor racing fans that throng the venue.
KN – As the Chief Engineer on the car could we expect it to be faster than before and if so what was done to make it faster.
Ten Pow – The car’s pieces are being put together with the aim of it running at an optimum level and hopefully we will be running up front, we are working on reliability on the whole because racing is something that one day you’re up next day you’re down, but our aim is to win always.
KN – When do you expect to do testing?
Ten Pow – Jeffrey and TOP POWER RACING team is scheduled to do some testing later this week. These group 4 cars are pushed to their limits. Basically the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 started life as a family road going vehicle with 271HP and we totally modify the engine to develop 600 to 800HP and drive train and lots of chassis modifications to put that horsepower to the ground. Essentially what I am getting at, engine, drive train and chassis are stressed to their limits. At those horsepower parts will break and that’s what we are working on, to make the complete package reliable. My aim is to win every race, but reliable issues with the package have plagued us so far in 2014.
