Essequibo and Berbice clash at DCC while the GCB Development X1 play defending champions Demerara at Everest
when the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior Inter-County four-day cricket begins today.
The GCB Unit heads into the second round as leaders after beating Essequibo by six wickets inside three days at DCC in the opening round while Berbice earned a draw in their game against Demerara at Bourda after the home team allowed a possible win to slip through their fingers by not enforcing the follow-on.
A maiden century from 21-year-old Kandasammy Surujnarine and 88 from Royston Crandon batted Berbice to safety after a double century from Rajendra Chandrika (his second at this level) and a well complied ton from Vishal Singh (his fourth at this level) had put Demerara in a strong position to force an outright win after they made 442 in their first innings.
After opting to bat again Trevon Griffith’s maiden century helped Demerara to a lead of 411.
The spinners enjoyed the DCC track with Essequibo’s left-arm spinner Anthony Adams getting a seven-wicket haul while the GCB Development X1’s Skipper Steven Jacobs had a six-wicket haul.
It is understood that the draw for the First-Class contracted players will be made next week and this could be the final chance for those in contention to remind those responsible for giving them the very lucrative contracts, of their abilities.
Riving battles over the next four days could be expected from the cream of Guyana’s players. Today’s play is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs.
Meanwhile, Crandon was involved in an on-field altercation with Demerara’s Shemroy Barrington which got physical when Crandon made contact with Barrington’s helmet during the final day of the last match at Bourda. Crandon has been banned for one match in this tournament and will not play today.
The former West Indies ODI player did not contest the decision which resulted in a ‘softer’ penalty being imposed. Barrington
was not reported since the Umpires reportedly did not hear what he said to Crandon.
