Five taxi drivers accused of trying to break into a businessman’s vehicle on Monday to steal cash were released
on $160,000 bail each when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The taxi drivers – Rolex Johnson, 37, of Grove, East Bank Demerara; Leroy Lloyd, 35, of James and Hunter Streets, Albouystown; Kurt Kendall, 37, of Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara; Collin Goodrich, 47, of Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara and Chetram Suknandan, 35, of Grove Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara – were all taken before Magistrate Ann McLennan for attempting to commit a felony.
It is alleged that on Monday (September 22) at Church Street, Georgetown, they attempted to steal from motor vehicle, GMM 575, owned by Navindra Latchman. The men pleaded not guilty to the allegations and submitted bail applications through their lawyers.
Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Gordon Mansfield, explained that Latchman had withdrawn money from a city bank and parked his vehicle on Church Street. Leaving the money behind in the vehicle, the man went into an insurance agency.
Sergeant Mansfield told the court that Johnson was seen attempting to enter the vehicle, while Lloyd, Kendall and Goodrich staked out near the vehicle. He explained that Suknandan was sitting in a car, patiently waiting on his accomplices.
Persons who noticed the suspicious movements raised an alarm and the men were arrested and taken to the police station where they were subsequently charged.
Mansfield did not object to bail but asked that it be set at a substantial amount, with conditions attached. He requested that the court order the quintet to report to the Sergeant at the Brickdam Police Station daily.
His request was, however, objected to by Defence Attorney Patrice Henry, who made bail applications on behalf of Johnson, Goodrich and Suknandan. He said that his clients would not be safe in the police station.
According to Henry, his clients had never been charged before. A bail application was similarly made for Kendall by Attorney-at-Law Mark Conway who said that he had an unblemished record. Lloyd was unrepresented.
At the end of the brief hearing, the Magistrate granted bail and the men are set to return to court on October 28.
