Hundreds of persons, including parents, teachers and students, swarmed the Ministry of Education’s Brickdam, Georgetown location over the past two days, as millions of dollars worth in educational books/texts were distributed.
Throughout the days, the Ministry, in collaboration with Food for the Poor Guyana Incorporated, hosted a book drive to commemorate Education Month. Focusing on literacy, reading materials were available to the public yesterday, free of charge.
Melcita Bovell, Technical Assistant and Coordinator of School Boards of the Ministry, told Kaieteur News that the materials were made available to the public in hopes that it would increase the overall literacy rate of the country. Bovell explained that “if more adults are reading, they will lead by example and in turn, promote literacy among young people.”
She said the programme is geared at urging adults to become role models by setting the precedent for higher quality in literacy and education in Guyana.
The Ministry official disclosed that Food for the Poor Guyana Incorporated is the organization that made the activities possible since the 40 ft. book-filled container was all donated by them along with an additional 1009 boxes of books.
Bovell expressed thanks to the organisation’s President Kent Vincent and the staff of Food for the Poor (FFP). She also expressed profound gratitude for everything that the organization has done over the years.
The official stated that they have been one of their largest stakeholders and supporters of the Ministry.
Prior to this drive, FFP delivered 150 mattresses to students of St. Ignatius Secondary School in Region 9 as well as 100 hundred-pound bags of beans to dormitory facilities throughout the country.
The organizers have pledged to continue in their efforts to work towards achieving a more literate Guyana.
