A 24-year-old construction worker appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with simple larceny.
According to the allegation, on September 20, last, at North Road, Georgetown, Anthony Peters of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, stole one X-Trail motorcycle valued at $380,000 – property of Edmond James.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones stated that the accused was spotted with the motorcycle at Roti Hut on North Road. He explained that the victim had left his motorcycle parked there earlier and Peters was in the process of moving off with it when a group of public-spirited citizens apprehended him.
Peters was handed over to the police and further investigations led to him being charged.
Prosecutor Jones objected to bail citing the prevalence of the offence. He emphasised that stealing has become a plague to society.
The Magistrate upheld the Prosecution’s request and Peters was remanded to prison. The case is set to be called again on October 28.
