An East Bank Berbice man will have to face a judge and jury on a charge of rape of a young girl.
Sheldon Edwards, a cane harvester of Pepper Street, Heathburn Village, East Bank Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court on a charge of having engaged in sexual penetration of a 13-year-old girl.
At the completion of the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) it was ruled that a prima facie case was made out against the accused.
The court was told that the alleged offence occurred on April 1, 2013, at Pepper Street, Heathburn, where he allegedly had sex with the teen.
He was initially placed on $200,000 bail.
The man had taken advantage of the teen whilst they were in a building alone. The child, a first form student, had confided in her friends at school what had happened, and her friends then informed their teacher.
A number of persons testified at the PI, including the teen, her mother and her teachers.
The court was told that it was the second time such an offence had occurred involving the accused. On the first occasion in the matter of sexual assault he was granted pre-trial liberty in the sum of $75,000.
He is being represented by attorney at law Charrandass Persaud.
