A huge crowd comprising of the six ethnic groups, but with a preponderance of Amerindians from several villages in 9 of Guyana’s ten administrative regions, converged at the Everest Sports Club and engaged in competitive sports rivalry and cultural activities in commemoration of Amerindian Heritage Month, yesterday morning.
This marked the final of the two -day event as the indigenous groups demonstrated acute skill, competing for honours in several sports disciplines which commenced Saturday morning last. Fans were truly entertained in the highly touted football encounter between Georgetown and Paruima. There were many missed opportunities interspersed by good goalkeeping skills from both custodians resulting in regular time ending nil all and forcing the game into penalty kicks. In the end the team from the Capital City prevailed 3-1.
The male encounter between Central Rupununi and Mabaruma ended in a goalless stalemate and also went to penalty kicks with Central Rupununi prevailing 4-1.
In female volleyball action, St Cuthbert Mission defeated Region 1 in the first preliminary game 12-17, 15-12, 19-15, while Laluni defeated Orealla 16-14, 15-13 after dropping the second set 12-15. Laluni then returned to take the championship honours defeating St Cuthbert Mission 15-7, 15-8.
Semifinal action in the male category of this discipline saw Central Rupununi prevailing over Mainstay 2-1, while the combined unit of Orealla/Siparuta defeated Wayaka by a similar margin. The two winners then clashed in the finals and Orealla/Siparuta prevailed 15-10, 15-12 after Central Rupununi
won the first set 15-9.
The teams also engaged in competitive cricket and Laluni won by 7 runs against St Cuthbert’s mission in the male category after batting first and scoring 49 runs. In reply, St Cuthbert’s could have only managed 43.
St Cuthbert Mission females avenged that loss stopping Laluni’s winning one match later; the former team batted first and made 72 runs from their 6 overs before restricting their opponents to 64 runs to take the championship honours.
There were also novelty events including Piwari dinking race (male and female) and archery among others. The competitors hailed from 9 of the country’s 10 administrative regions including St Cuthbert’s Mission, Laluni, and Swan (4), Linden and Wiruni (10), Tapakuma (2), Maraikabai (5) Mabaruma and Moruca (1), Mahdia, North Rupununi, Central Rupununi and Karasabai (9), Jawalla and Paruima (7).
