Three men posing as plainclothes policemen terrorized, bound and robbed a Green Acres, East Bank Demerara mother and children after invading their home around 19.00 hrs on Sunday.
Melanie Leung said that the men entered via the back door after holding her 11-year-old son at gunpoint, while he was bathing in the yard.
She said that the attack lasted some 15 minutes and the men eventually escaped with jewellery, including a chain estimated to be worth some $1M; two laptop computers and other electronic equipment, which they packed into her children’s haversacks.
Mrs. Leung and several minors, including her three children, aged 13, 11 and eight, were in the house when the attack occurred.
Still traumatized from her ordeal, Mrs. Leung told Kaieteur News yesterday that the family was at home at around 19.00 hrs when a white car drove up to their home.
“The car come up to my gate and blow, and when my son peep out, they say that they were police.”
Mrs. Leung, who said she remained in her house at the time, recalled that two of the men wore shirt-jacs, while one of them wore jeans and a green jersey. According to the woman, the ‘policemen’ claimed that they were patrolling the neighbourhod, and even took her name and telephone number before leaving.
Around 19.10 hrs, her 11-year-old son was bathing outside when the same men, now wearing caps and with rags covering their faces, returned.
One of the men held her son at gunpoint, and after asking whether any ‘males’ were inside, the bandits took the lad into the house via the back door.
On entering, two of the robbers took Mrs. Leung and her son to the top flat and began to ransack the premises. After finding nothing of value, one of the bandits pressed a gun to Mrs. Leung’s head and ordered her to “show me the gold and the diamonds.”
Eventually, she opened a drawer which contained some of the family’s jewellery. The men then emptied two of her children’s haversacks and packed the jewellery, cell phones,‘ and electronic equipment inside.
They then duct-taped their victims before escaping. Mrs. Leung said she eventually managed to free herself and other relatives before contacting the police.
The woman said that she was so terrified that she was reluctant to open her door when plainclothes ranks came yesterday to check the scene for fingerprints.
“Up to now, when the policemen came I was trembling,” she said. “They were wearing shirt-jacs just like the men who had come on Sunday night.” She only allowed them in after the ranks produced their identification cards.
According to Mrs. Leung, the security guard who is posted at the entrance of the community said he did not recall seeing any strange vehicle entering Green Acres at the time of the robbery.
