A man who was described as a known bandit, a nuisance and a kleptomaniac was on Monday jailed after he pleaded guilty to two counts of simple larceny.
Anil Kumar, called ‘Black Shirt’, 42, of No 60 Village, Corentyne was on Monday sentenced to a total of 42 months in jail by Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s court and pleaded guilty to two counts of simple larceny.
Kumar is accused of between September 13 and September 14, last; he entered the premises’ of businessman of Rajendranauth Parsram at No 61 village and stole a quantity of groceries, liquor and other items worth over $200,000 and escaped.
The bandit returned again on September 15 and repeated the act. On the second occasion he stole items worth over $20, 000 before climbing the fence and making his escape.
Prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sheriff told the court that Parsram is an agent for DDL among other agents. He would usually store a lot of items on his premises and yard for resale. On the days in question Kumar scale the fence and carried away the items.
However, the bandit realized that his actions were being caught on surveillance cameras which have been mounted around the premises.
When the businessman checked his stocks he realized a number of items missing. The matter was reported and a check of the cameras showed Kumar committing the acts. He was arrested and charged. Faced with compelling evidence ‘Black Shirt’ threw in the towel and pleaded guilty.
He was sentenced to 30 months on the first charge and 12 months on the second charge. The sentences will run consecutively.
