Prime Minister Samuel Hinds fulfilled his promise to students of the Alness Primary School on the Corentyne last Friday as he stopped by and donated a complete computer system with a table. The students, during a visit earlier this year, to his office in Georgetown had requested the item and the PM made good on his promise during a short visit to the school.
The simple handing over ceremony was attended by Region Six Chairman, Mr. David Armogan; Members of Parliament, Mr. Faizal M. Jaffarally and Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, Regional Education Officer (Region 6) Ms. Volika Jaikishun and Education Officer (Secondary) Mrs. Bhagmattie La Cruz as well as members of the school’s Parent- Teachers’ Association (PTA).
Ms. Jaikishun thanked the Prime Minister for the kind gesture and living up to his promises. “I know as we celebrate Education Month, this little donation that the Prime Minister has for you, will help you boys and girls to become literate, and I hope you will care this donation, and it will be put into great use,” she added.
Region Six Chairman, Mr. Armogan, said that it was perhaps the first time a Prime Minister was visiting Alness Primary School. Armogan added that Hinds is particularly interested in education and that the donation will assist the students to become more literate.
Prime Minister Hinds, while addressing the students and teachers, reflected about his time, too, as a primary school student and recalled how back then, at the Novar Primary School in Mahaicony how officials used to visit that school. He challenged the students that they too aspire to become Prime Ministers and Ministers.
“You have to take responsibility for our country, and that is why we are paying so much attention to education in our government…we know it’s still not enough, but we don’t have much yet in our country….but we still have more than we had 20 years ago…,” he added.
“I’m pleased to be with you and to make this presentation today,” Hinds added. He reminded the students about the ‘Three R’s— reading, writing and arithmetic’ and even included a fourth ‘R’, “we need to become competent in the fourth ‘R’— Computer— so we have to learn how to use a computer.”
Hinds expressed how pleased he is to be able, “from a small fund that they give the Prime Minister, to put aside some money and get this computer set for you.”
Prime Minister Hinds and the other officials then handed over the equipment to the school’s headteacher. The computer and printer would also be used to manage the school’s records.
