Mrs. Ruby Wilkinson, the oldest resident of the Palms, will be celebrating her 104th birthday today.
Born on September 22, 1910, Mrs. Wilkinson is a former street vendor and resident of Buxton, on the East Coast of Demerara. She has been a resident of the Palms for the past nine years.
Mrs. Wilkinson was already outfitted in her special dress and hat when Kaieteur News visited her yesterday.
Despite being somewhat bedridden, she recalled the days when she lived in Buxton and would sell sugar cake and tamarind balls at nearby schools for a living.
Although nurses described her as a kind, smart and lively person with no major health issues, Mrs. Wilkinson was not very forthcoming with information about her life during the interview; due to the “pains of old age” and a fall which she sustained a few days ago.
Nurses at the institution said that although she remembers very little of her past and has lost some of her hearing, the elderly woman shrugs her shoulders and sways whenever she hears music.
The staff said that she would often reminisce on the days when she would go dancing. Residents of the ward said the elderly woman also has a sweet tooth.
One person noted that “she likes tamarind balls and sweetie and is beloved by everyone in the ward. She is a very quiet and sweet person and we don’t know whether she has many close relatives, but a woman would visit from time to time.”
Wilkinson expressed gratitude to God for sparing her life.
When asked what the secret to her longevity is, Mrs. Wilkinson just lifted her hands and pointed to the ceiling in acknowledgement to the Almighty.
The centenarian is a widow, mother of two and former member of the Weslyan Church. For her birthday, she simply requested her favorite treats, “tamarind balls and sweetie or whatever God has in store.”
