It ended in controversy, but after the officials checked and rechecked the University of Guyana Wolves were declared champions of the Banks DIH Sevens One-Day Tournament after escaping with a narrow 26-24 victory over Yamaha Caribs yesterday, at the National Park.
Notorious for relinquishing leads, the academics rebounded from a 12-5 first half discrepancy to defeat a game, but clearly over-confident Caribs unit, who seemed to relax thinking that the game was over despite some amount of time left in the contest.
Tries by winger and tournament MVP, Ryan Dey (two), Philbert Joseph and Osei McKenzie, together with two conversions by Godfrey Broomes facilitated the immensely improved team in their win over the Caribs.
McKenzie also chipped in with a conversion to earn the Wolves their first lien on the Banks Sevens championship.
Akeem Fraser’s double, a try by Andrew Jarvis, Henry’s conversion as well as a try and conversion by Carl Lewis was not enough for the Caribs to defeat last year’s tournament runners up.
UG captain Rondell McArthur speaking after the game said that the win was a significant achievement for them, adding that all the hard work that they’ve done under the guidance of Head Coach Laurie Adonis has evidently paid dividends.
“This is the first time we won this title and it was very challenging because all these teams especially the Caribs came here today hungry for the championship, I must take my hat off to the guys, we have improved tremendously under Coach Larry Adonis.”
Before the men’s final, they were tag matches involving the female clubs with Hornets emerging winners.
