The Government of Guyana on Friday continued its commitment to close the Information Communication Technology gap in Guyana by distributing 191 more laptops, this time to residents of Huntley, Mahaicony.
Recipients who received the laptops were trained on site, and were instructed to return daily until the required 10 hours of training was completed.
Region Five Chairman Bindrabhan Bisnauth took the opportunity to clear up any misconceptions and rumours that were spread by persons regarding privacy issues after receiving the laptops. He expressed gratitude to President Donald Ramotar for continuing the initiative which was started by former president, Bharrat Jagdeo.
He stated that, ‘One Laptop Per Family’ officials visited Region Five on many occasions and distributed hundreds of laptops to families. He further cautioned families to desist from attempting to obtain more than one of the device.
He urged residents to be patient and reassured them that every citizen who applied for a laptop will receive one.
One laptop recipient said, “This is a wonderful project the government has done for the citizens of Guyana. This is an age of technology and with the laptop a lot of things can be done, online shopping, research books can be downloaded, sports can be followed etc.”
Another recipient said the laptop will be useful for her school aged children.
The OLPF programme seeks to provide internet access, training and skills development to families nationwide. Since it was started in 2011, thousands of families have received laptops.
The Government’s overall goal is for 90,000 laptops to be in the hands of Guyanese at the end of the programme.
