The 2014 edition of the Annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament starts October 11 with a triple-header at the
Victoria ground on the East Coast of Demerara starting at 4:00pm.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur informed that 32 teams compete for attractive cash prizes and the Mayor’s Cup. The winners walk away with $1,000,000, runners-up $500,000, third $200,000 and fourth place $100,000.
Teams will come from Georgetown, East Coast, West Demerara, Berbice and East Bank Demerara, while matches will be played at several venues. Those venues are Victoria, Den Amstel, Monedderlust West Coast Berbice, GFC and the National Stadium. Arthur informed that five of the teams participating this year are new to the Mayor’s Cup; Haslington (EC), Eagles (WD), Agricola, Kuru Kururu and Timehri Panthers (EB).
Among the other teams on show are defending champs Alpha United, who will be keen on maintaining their dominance, while other past champions in Fruta Conquerors, Camptown, Pele and the Guyana Defence Force. The remaining teams are GFC, Western Tigers, Beacon, Riddim Squad, Santos, Police, Golden Grove, Victoria Kings, BV Triumph, Buxton, Mahaica, Ann’s Grove, Stewartville, Slingerz, Young Achievers, Pouderoyen, Monedderlust, Rosignol United, Cougars, NA United and Grove Hi Tech.
The Mayor’s Cup Committee is in the process of approaching sponsors for assistance and is calling on corporate Guyana to support the tournament, which has received the full approval of the Guyana Football Federation.
Opening round of games at Victoria will see Haslington vs GFC, Golden Grove vs Western Tigers and Victoria Kings vs GDF. October 17 at GFC – Grove Hi Tech vs Beacon, BV Triumph vs Riddim Squad and Buxton vs Conquerors. October 18 at Den Amstel – Eagles vs Santos and Stewartville vs Camptown. October 23 at No 5 West Coast Berbice – Rosignol vs Den Amstel, Cougars vs Slingerz and Monedderlust vs Police.
October 24 at GFC – NA United vs Agricola, Alpha vs Mahaica and Pele vs Ann’s Grove, and October 25 at Den Amstel – Young Achievers and Pouderoyen vs Timehri Panthers.
Other games featuring the winners of the opening round are fixed for October 29, 31, November 1, 5, 12, 14, 19 and 23 when the final and third place playoff will be held.
The tournament, organised by Mr. Arthur and the Mayor’s Cup Committee, is held in recognition of Mayor Hamilton Green’s birthday. This year, the Mayor turns 80 years on November 8.
Mayor Green in his earlier years was a multi-talented athlete. He participated in athletics and football for his school Queen’s College, along with table tennis, dominoes and was a general fitness enthusiast. He has made lots of contributions to sport over the years also. Mayor Green served as Prime Minister and Minister of Sports during the PNC government and was also one time Patron of the Guyana Football Federation.
