Hetmyer, Hemra and Jacobs slam half centuries
By Zaheer Mohamed
The GCB Development Squad defeated Essequibo by six wickets in their first round game of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior four-day Inter County tournament yesterday.
Set 267 for victory, The GCB Development Squad, led by half centuries from Shimron Hetmyer, Chanderpaul Hemraj and skipper Steven Jacobs, formalized victory after lunch on the third day as they ended on 271-4 at the Demerara Cricket Club.
The GCB Development Squad resumed on their overnight score of 84 without lost with Shimron Hetmyer on 52 and Tagenarine Chanderpaul on 27, the pair extended their stand to 137 with level headed batting. They carefully rotated the strike and were quick to dispatch the bad balls.
Hetmyer, the more aggressive of the two, stroked Mark Tyrell for a boundary and drove Anthony Adams down the ground for another, while Chanderpaul took boundaries off Adams and Fredericks. The pair continued to accumulate their runs as they frustrated the Essequibians somewhat, until Hetmyer who appeared set for a century was caught off Adams for a well compiled 85 which contained eleven fours and came off 121 balls in 147 minutes.
Left arm spinner Hemchand Persaud then had Chanderpaul caught in the slips with one that bounced and turned with the score on 149. He departed for 44 with three fours off 138 balls and occupied the crease for 162 minutes.
Skipper Jacobs and Hemraj carried their team within sight of victory with a third wicket stand of 106.
Hemraj started off his innings in attacking fashion, dumping Persaud for two sixes and driving Adams for a boundary. The Essequibo spinners managed to slow the scoring rate with some steady bowling, but Hemraj and Jacobs were content to settle for singles and doubles. However Jacobs matured as his innings progressed and spanked Fredericks to the mid-wicket boundary before driving him through covers. The right handed Malteenoes Sports Club all-rounder was put down by Ricardo Peters, running in from long-on off Adams, but soon reached his fifty a single to long-on.
Hemraj drove Adams to the cover boundary to reach his half century and then celebrated the milestone, which came off 91 balls, with a six off Peters over long-on. But Peters wasn’t afraid to loop the ball and bowled Jacobs for 51 as the batsman attempted to sweep with the score on 255. He spent 70 minutes at the crease and faced 88 balls, hitting six fours.
Hemraj, who plays for Everest Cricket Club, punched Peters through covers before he was out hit wicket in the said over for 66. He batted for 118 minutes and faced 108 balls and hit four fours and a similar number of sixes. Keemo Paul (06*) and David Latchaya (03*) then saw their team to victory off 75.1 overs. Peters was the pick of the bowlers with 2-16 off three overs, Adams had 1-28 and Persaud 1-38.
Scores: Essequibo 232 and 163, Development Squad 128 and 271-4.
