– Police focus on ISAAC
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will today host its National Senior Track and Field Championships at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, as part of its mandated calendar of events for the International Association of Athletics Federation.
The annual mandatory meet will commence from 10am with the AAG publicly stating that it will use the meet to select a team for the South American Under-23 Championships set for October 3-5 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
The Senior Championships will feature a plethora of athletes over 16-years-old vying for honour and bragging rights to be called the ‘top senior athlete in the nation’. Notwithstanding, Guyana’s top club, Police Progressive Youth Club, will only be fielding about six athletes at the meet since their training programme is geared toward Joint Services.
Contacted yesterday, Police Coach, Mark Scott told Kaieteur Sport that Olympic quarter-miler, Winston George will not be competing today. In addition, national sprint ace, Alita Moore will also not be competing along with several of their senior athletes.
“Right now we are preparing for Joint Services and we only had about a week’s notice for this meet. We will focus on those who we believe could qualify for the Under-23 Championships at the meet,” Scott said.
In that regard, he said that sprinter Tevin Garraway and middle distance dynamo, Kevin Bayley will lead about six athletes representing the club today. The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is also in a preparation mode for the Inter-Services Annual Athletics Championships (ISAAC).
But despite the focus of those two teams, the meet is expected to attract athletes from Running Brave Athletics Club, Upper Demerara, Mercury Fast Laners and several other clubs today in an effort to put their athletes up for national selection.
