It was all smiles yesterday on the faces of Grace Bovell, a mother of seven, and two
dozen other mothers, when they received maternity kits from the Rotary Club of Georgetown. The items were handed over by the club’s President, Ronald Burch-Smith.
Bovell, a 34-year-old Port Kaituma mother, delivered her baby at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) three weeks ago, and was among the 25 new and expectant mothers who were grateful recipients.
The kits, which conclude towels, baby diapers, gowns among other items, were donated to the mothers, in collaboration with Courts Guyana Inc and Ansa McAl Limited.
According to Burch-Smith, the hampers were intended to benefit mothers from remote regions who may arrive at the health institution without the supplies they would need for the first few days after delivering their babies.
Kaieteur News was told that the mothers were selected by the social workers attached to GPHC. Burch-Smith said that yesterday’s donation was the third they have made within the last 18 months.
“These items will last for at least two weeks and the materials are for mothers and children,” Burch-Smith related.
Asked what prompted the club to make such needed contributions to mothers, Rotarian Marilyne Trotz said that they had received a call from the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Khan, who informed them about the situations that some of the mothers in the hinterland regions face.
“He (GPHC’s CEO) said that they had a problem in the maternity ward where a number of expectant mothers arrived at the hospital with nothing,” Trotz noted. She added that it was then that the club decided to step in and assist the needy.
The unit’s supervisor, Sister June Cato, thanked the club and the companies who made the donation possible.
“Sometimes we would have to ask some of the mothers to assist the ones who didn’t walk with anything,” she stressed.
At the end of the forum, the hospital was asked to submit a list of mothers who visit the hospital without supplies, to the club.
