Twenty-eight nurses from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) are now capable of offering an advanced level of paediatric care after completing a training course in Emergency Paediatric Nursing.
The three-month course came through a collaborative effort of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the GPHC. The two entities have been partnering for the past five years in an effort to have local medical staffers better trained.
The nurses who completed the training course which ended yesterday were selected from the hospital’s Paediatric Ward and the Emergency Room.
They were listed as Nandaram Dat, Leana Seeram, Sheba Thomas, Nicola Boston, Yulisa Grimmond, Geeta Persaud, Naudia Grant, Camile Fordyce, Fanela Persaud, Simone Tieschmaker, Davina Fernandes, Natafeia Beaton, Melissa Langrey, Le-Ann Hamilton, Julia Rankin, Candacie Babb, Farah Hassan, Osiola Gilbert, Ronette McKenzie, Renson Fraser, Krystle Halley, Olenka Agard, Neisha Norville, Teshanna Headly, Angelique Albert, Kenisha Mc Kay, J. Persaud and Shade Fraser.
Instructor of the programme, Paediatric Nurse Educator, Yoshida Sumiko, who has been coming here for the past three years to offer her services, said that the main goal of the partnership has been to improve the paediatric nursing services.
She added that in order to achieve that goal, the focus was on two areas, Paediatric Nursing Practical Education Training and Ward Environment.
“To improve the paediatric ward environment, child-friendly artwork has been done. I am sure that the child-friendly environment will reduce fear, anxiety and suffering of hospitalized children,” she related.
The instructor added that two educational sessions conducted were a “Paediatric Emergency Skills Course” which was designed for registered nurses, nursing assistants and training nurses, and a “Paediatric Basic Life Support Skills Course” which was designed for all Paediatric Nurses.
She explained that she will return next year to offer three other courses to the nurses which they, in return, will transmit to their patients.
GPHC’s Assistant Director of Nursing Services, Owen John, said that JICA has been doing a lot for the hospital and its nurses.
“JICA runs a voluntary programme and has been bringing in health care persons to help us,” John said.
He continued, “Yoshida Sumiko has been helping us in paediatric nursing education and creating a healthy environment that will enhance the delivery of paediatric care.”
Leana Seeram, one of the participants, said that the course was a beneficial one. She explained that she and her colleagues were taught about basic paediatric care and noted that the course will help her in her career, since she works in the Emergency Room and deals with a lot of children.
