– Four arrested and charged
Berbice police continue to make inroads into the criminal enterprise in the Ancient County. Quick work by police in Berbice led to the arrest of four men who were believed to be part of a criminal Gang that has been roving various parts of the country and creating mischief. They were in a car.
Three of the men are from Linden, while the other is from the East Coast Demerara. Their latest encounter was on September 4 last, when they allegedly robbed Baljit’s Enterprise, at Armadale, Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice, which also houses a Money Gram outlet.
Around 13:00 hrs on the day in question two armed bandits entered the store, held the cashier at gunpoint and forced the customers to lie on the floor. They then demanded cash, and grabbed an undisclosed sum of money before escaping in a waiting car. However, their escape bid was short-lived as they were nabbed a short distance away.
They were subsequently identified as the perpetrators of the crime. They appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court, where they were not required to plead to a joint charge of robbery under arms.
The men Deon Adonis, 37, a lumber dealer of Lot 289 One-Mile Wismar; Lindon Couchman, 50, a businessman of Lot 244 South Amelia’s Ward; Marvis Fraser, 27, a labourer of Lot 43 Block 22 Wismar, Linden; and Alfred Branche, 40, a businessman of Annandale, East Coast Demerara.
The case for the prosecution is that on September 4th at the above address, while armed with dangerous weapons to wit a shotgun and a pistol, went into the internet café owned by Kalamattie Persaud and robbed cashier Malisa Nelson, and Brijnauth Baldeo of cash and jewelry totaling $3,219,227.
No shots were fired during the ordeal.
After the robbery, the masked men fled in a Toyota motor car with a suspected false number plate. The police, minutes after receiving information, stopped a car in the vicinity of Number Six village, West Coast Berbice and arrested four men who were inside. The men in the interim had changed their clothing and the number plate of the vehicle.
A search conducted on the alleged bandits and the vehicle unearthed a bag and a cap, which witnesses said were used by the perpetrators. However, no cash or firearm was found. The men were taken into custody and subsequently charged.
They were placed on $200,000 bail, and are expected to return to the Fort Wellington Magistrates Court on September 23.
