A taxi driver, charged with barging into a woman’s home in the wee hours of the morning, holding her at gunpoint and demanding cash and jewellery, was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Jesse Knight, 29, of Lot 311 Independence Boulevard, Georgetown was taken before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a robbery under arms charge.
It is alleged that on September 12, last at Robb Street, Georgetown, while being in the company of another and armed with a gun, Knight robbed Desiree Fredericks of $10,000 cash.
He pleaded not guilty to the allegations and submitted a bail application through his lawyer, Kayreen Stephenson.
In a bid to secure reasonable bail for the accused, Stephenson stated that Knight, a single man, has never been charged before and does not pose a flight risk.
Her application was objected to by Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant who cited the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence.
He said that a firearm was used and explained that around 02:00 hours on the day in question, Fredericks was in her apartment when Knight and an accomplice entered through an open door, held her at gunpoint and demanded that she hand over cash and jewelry.
The frightened woman reportedly told the duo that she only had $10,000 and handed it over. They took the cash and fled the scene.
She immediately called the Alberttown Police Station and reported the matter. The Police who responded chased after the suspected bandits.
The chase, Grant said, led them to the defendant and he was arrested in a taxi. He was taken to the Police Station and Fredericks fingered him as one of the persons who had robbed her.
The Prosecutor explained that there was light in the house at the time of the robbery and the victim had known Knight as a taxi driver before the incident. The defence attorney, however, claimed that no identification parade was conducted.
Bail was refused and the case was transferred to Magistrate Judy Latchman. It is set to be called for report and fixtures on September 30.
