The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) of a 31-year-old man charged with killing his reputed wife by strangling and suffocating
her in a bucket of water, got underway before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday.
Vindra Siriram also known as ‘Krishna’ is charged with murdering the mother of three, Shelly Ann Persaud between June 9 and June 10, last at their “Lot 34 Friendship, East Bank Demerara residence.
Persaud, a housewife, was on June 10, last found at the bottom of the back stairs of the couple’s Friendship residence. Her head was partly submerged in a five-gallon bucket of water.
According to reports, the couple’s eight-year-old daughter had told relatives that she heard her parents arguing some time before the murder.
The child reportedly also claimed to have seen her father beating her mother and pulling her hair while saying to her, “Tonight is the last night you will see your mother.”
Following the discovery of the woman’s body a report was made by the family to the police. Subsequent investigations led to Seeram being taken into custody and charged for his wife’s murder.
On June 13, he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He has been in custody ever since. Siriram is being represented by Defence Attorney, Keavon Bess.
As the PI started yesterday morning, Sherry Persaud, the sister of the deceased, was the first to take the stand.
Next to give evidence in the matter was the couple’s neighbour, Iris Dillon. Her testimony was followed by that of Detective Constable, Rohan Baksh, who related the role he played in taking a caution statement from Siriram.
Bess cross examined Baksh and Dillon.
The PI is scheduled to continue today. Two more police detectives are expected to take the stand and offer sworn
testimonies on behalf the state.
