Dear Sir,
In extending my profound gratitude to Messr: Orin Davidson, former Sports Editor, Stabroek News, for his masterpiece which was well constructed with qualitative research, an article captioned Matthias must explain his “Toothless Jaguars” S.N. 09.09.14.
Editor, with no offence meant to sports journalist Duncan Saul, on a pertinent point, can the individual explain publicly, what he meant in the opening paragraph of his article? “Golden Jaguars in last ditch attempt to qualify in a must win match against hosts St. Kitts & Nevis”; S.N: 07.09.14. Wherein, “With only a mathematical chance of qualifying for the second round of the CFU Caribbean Cup Guyana required a win against host nation St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN) in their final matchup at the Warner Park Sporting Complex to keep their hopes alive.”
And from a mathematical perspective, albeit equation/formula did Duncan know that Guyana’s chance of qualifying, apart winning had to secure a victory by at least a 6 goals clear margin! Since the hosts had already beaten Dominica 5-0, so in actuality the hosts goal difference would have been -1, had Guyana succeeded and the Jaguars +4 having previously lost 0-2 to St. Lucia.
As a consequence I must express my disappointment that Saul’s unprofessional calculative approach had escaped “proof reading and editing” by the Sports Editor, along with a word of caution.
However, I await with bated breath the publication of a Sports Scope – Or Opinion, since it’s time for hard questions to be asked on the “continuous maladministration and underdevelopment of local football”.
Meanwhile, Davidson’s no-nonsense approach in his article, compounded by explicit terms of reference i.e. “Toothless Jaguars, A hodge-podge collection of players; due to a combination of petty politics and lack of will, compliments of a dysfunctional GFF, Guyana is now in the doldrums. Rather the buck stops squarely at the feet of Guyana Football Federation President Christopher Matthias and his cohorts, who made an unholy mess in assembling and equipping the squad for a vital competition; Debt increase, nothing to be ashamed of for small countries, especially in Guyana’s case because the Jaguars could not have reached as far in those 2014 WC qualifiers without a costly bill”.
While space and time constraints will not allow me to elaborate more upon Orin’s meritous quotes and references. Once again Orin Davidson, a hearty thank you for providing the public with a meaningful, professional and journalistic insight towards disseminating information, in a well constructed manner. That in the past was compromised with unprofessionalism, which hid incompetence, ineptitude and nepotism.
Editor, with it being common knowledge that the inherent debt was in the vicinity of $30,000,000, did Matthias upon his election prioritize the reduction by way of fundraising ventures? Or, did he expect it to be serviced by the Horse Racing Authority!
By the way what is the current debt now? From all indications Matthias loves to do things his own way that is why there would always be a clarion call for a “Vote of no Confidence” since constitutionality, protocol and parliamentary procedures are continuously over looked. In this aspect can he explain why the respective clubs and associations were not attached to the various players selected for public knowledge? As one could have easily ascertained how many players from GDF i.e. were selected, and if some of the selectees can actually be selected for representation of an Association team! With Matthias not having any clout financially, to secure sponsorship/funding for competitions, international matches, seminars, workshops et al. As his paid advertisement in S.N. 2013 “Expression of Interest” had indicated. The next best option would be to resign rather than continuously “stifle the development of the sport”!
Respectfully yours,
Lester Sealey.
