City Mayor, Hamilton Green, has noted that members of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) will advance with their efforts to restore integrity and decency to City Hall.
Last Monday, concerned citizens joined M&CC officials at another picketing exercise outside of Chief Justice, Ian Chang’s Georgetown Supreme Court Office. Demonstrators blamed the prolonged deadlock at City Hall on the failing judicial system.
They vowed to continue the remonstration exercise, which they say is their only means of voicing their dissatisfaction at the manner in which the judiciary has handled matters pertaining to the council.
Mayor Green said that the council is in no position to deal with its current situation, but turning to the Supreme Court of Judicature for answers has proven to be another dead end.
Within the past months, the Council has underlined its objections over the government appointed Town Clerk, (Ag) Carol Sooba.
Sooba, who was selected for the post by the Local Government Ministry, has been blatant in her refusal to carry out the decisions of the Council.
Her actions have attracted a series of legal proceedings from members of Council, who noted that the rift between the executive and administration of the municipality, has affected the system vital to the provision of services to the citizens of Georgetown.
While noting that the council has failed in its attempts to get rid of Sooba, Mayor Green said that duly elected councillors calling for no more delays in the court proceedings.
“Our recent picketing exercise was not only to remind the judiciary that they form an important aspect of good governance and they should be neither influence nor compromised by perception, reality nor the Executive.”
Mayor Green called on the citizens to unite in the struggle to ensure that authentic democracy is restored in the nation.
He said that today at 9:30 hours, the Council will be spearheading a mass prayer and solidarity meeting on the grounds of City Hall as part of efforts to restore democracy to the operations of the Council.
Green said that the Council will also be exploring its options as it relates to future action, at the upcoming exercise.
“We will be standing in solidarity with the 73 per cent of the people, who voted for members of this Council to be their representatives at the last Local Government Elections.” the Mayor said.
