While cleanup exercises in Albouystown and West Ruimveldt are nearing completion, several other communities have now commenced their sanitation programme under the “Clean-Up My Country” Programme.
After residents were contracted in East La Penitence, Lamaha Park and Stevedore Housing Scheme during the course of last week, work commenced with the de-bushing of alleyways, parapets and cleaning of drains within the communities.
When the “Community Monitoring Unit” visited Lamaha Park on Friday, Community Coordinator, Walter Charles, informed the team that block one, which comprises some 3600 square foot of land, was totally de-bushed and drains were de-silted.
Charles noted that his team was able to remove five large caimans, one anaconda and another large snake during the exercise. He said that this was a great relief for the community since the area was crowded with thick vegetation which created dwelling space for the animals.
The sanitation of the second block of Lamaha Park commenced yesterday. The community is divided into three blocks and 42 residents have been contracted to undertake the cleanup exercise.
When the “Community Monitoring Unit” conducted inspections in East La Penitence, the Community Coordinator, Shawn Edinboro, told the Monitoring Unit that block one of the community, bounded by Cocorite and Freeman Streets, was completed.
Overgrown vegetation from alleyways was removed, parapets weeded and drains de-silted. The coordinator also opted to clean the secondary canal which streams from Vlissengen Road to Mandela Avenue in three phases, based on the boundaries of the three community blocks.
The group comprising 20 persons commenced cleaning the community on September 4 and is expected to complete the project on October 3, 2014.
Residents contracted to clean-up Stevedore Housing Scheme, also commenced their clean-up exercise on September 12.
Moving further into Georgetown, the Monitoring Unit visited Cummings Lodge to have a view of the current state of the community and the works that will be required to enhance the appearance of the community and minimize its health risks, in light of the increase in vector-borne diseases.
Work is expected to commence soon in Tiger Bay, Kitty, Campbellville and Atlantic Gardens.
