Under the theme ‘Literate by Grade 4 through consistent home, school and community involvement’, officials of the Region 10 Education Department, recently embarked on a series of activities to celebrate Education month in the Region.
Those activities included the National Inter School Essay Writing competition, ‘Drop everything and read,’ and the ‘Literacy and Numeracy Exhibition Reading Tent’, which were coordinated, by Literacy coordinator, Ms Ava Chapman.
Officials also met with residents and sought to reinforce the importance of education for both parents and their children.
Other activities still to come include the first round of the Primary schools’ debate today at the Linden Constabulary Hall, and the reading and elocution competitions slated for tomorrow at the Mackenzie Primary School.
Round two of the Inter- Primary Debating Competition will be run off on September 22nd also at the Constabulary Hall.
Residents of Coomacka and Kwakwani, meanwhile, will be afforded the opportunity of meeting with the education officials and interacting with them on September 25th and 26th respectively, while the third round of the debating competition will be held on the 30th, with the finals on October 10th. A jump rope marathon to be coordinated by Lindley Langhorne is expected to run off at the Watooka Hard Court for primary schools on October 3rd.
Ms Chapman expressed satisfaction with the participation of the schools in the various activities so far, adding that she hopes to see the same sort of enthusiasm for those still to come.
According to Chapman, pupils travelled from as far as Bamia for the reading tent and fun city, which were held at the Education Department.
And from all appearances they had loads of fun as they huffed and puffed and did other reenactments of the stories that were read and dramatized by their hosts.

Meanwhile, overseas based Lindener, Raymond Hudson, was able to put huge smiles on the faces of several children and their parents, whom he presented with backpacks and school supplies and other items recently.
Hudson who hails from Christianburg, and is an advocate for education and development, said he felt committed to giving back because his own mother did the same.
‘My mother had nineteen children, and at one time had to struggle as a single parent, and I’m quite sure that if there were persons to assist her, it would have made life a lot easier for her.
“Nonetheless she persevered and was able to successfully raise her children, and after migrating she pursued the course of always giving back to this community. So whatever I’m doing, it is in honor of my mother, and I will continue to support persons not only from this community, but wherever there is a need,” Hutson declared.
Hutson also presented the single parent with the most children, with a rice cooker, and other special parents with novel items such as wrist watches, among other things.
Both parents and their children expressed heartfelt appreciation for the young man’s benevolence.
