The body of an alleged bandit with two gunshot wounds was found Saturday night, minutes after he and two other men allegedly robbed a man at a shop in Albouystown.
The dead man has been identified as 22-year-old popular footballer Orlando Fredericks called “Bull Dog” of Adelaide Street, Charlestown, Georgetown.
Fredericks, a father of one was shot to his shoulder and abdomen. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
There are reports that Fredericks was beaten by some residents before he was taken to the hospital.
The police in a release said that at about 23:35 hrs Saturday night, two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, held up a man in a shop between James and Non Pariel Streets, Albouystown, and fled with the victim’s gold chain.
Police said that one of the perpetrators was later found on Sussex Street, Albouystown, with suspected gunshot wounds.
He was identified as Orlando Fredericks.
At the scene yesterday, an eyewitness to the robbery said that he saw three men on bicycles, with kerchiefs on their faces approach a man identified as “Omali,” and grabbed his gold chain.
The eyewitness said that “Omali” was talking with some men at the shop.
“I see when they get the chain they ride into different streets and then them men (“Omali” and his friends) left the shop so I don’t know if they went behind him (Fredericks) or what,” the eyewitness said.
This newspaper understands that the 22-year-old alleged bandit was shot by a friend of the victim but managed to ride away before collapsing at Punt Trench Dam, Albouystown, a short distance from where the robbery took place.
There are reports that Fredericks may have been shot again after he left the scene of the robbery.
“Them man mussy follow he and shoot he. He messed with the wrong set of people; is that what happen, and the thing is everybody know ‘Bull Dog’ so I don’t know why he come do them things here,” the eyewitness said.
The dead man’s mother, Melissa Fredericks, admitted that her son “was no angel” but claimed that he was good to her.
Mrs. Fredericks said that she was at work when her older son visited her and informed her that his sibling had been killed.
“He tell me that ‘Bull’ get shoot and he dead so I went straight to the hospital but I didn’t go see him, I send my husband to identify him because I couldn’t go in and see him,” the woman said.
Fighting to hold back tears, the mother of three said that she was informed that her son and two of his friends had robbed a man at Albouystown and escaped.
“I hear the man friend shoot he but he ride away and then collapse. People say that they stand over he when he collapsed and shoot he again and then they beat he before they called in the police,” a tearful Fredericks said.
She added that she was informed that the police found the gold chain which her son had snatched from the man when they took him to the hospital.
“I see my son 7’ o clock yesterday (19:00 hrs on Saturday). He come by me and he eat and so and then he leave,” the mother said, adding that her son had gotten himself into some trouble sometime back and was forced to take shelter at different locations.
“He does be here, in Diamond and Tiger Bay because of them same madness. I talk to him so many times but he wouldn’t listen to me but if you live by the sword you will die by the sword,” the distraught woman said.
She added that people would often tell her that they heard that her son had been involved in some robbery but whenever she confronted him, he would deny it and claim that “people only using his name.”
“He never like to listen; he does play like he knows everything and he ain’t even start life yet.”
But Mrs. Fredericks said that despite her son’s “bad ways,” he had a good side.
This newspaper was told that the now dead man was employed with a large firm but left the job sometime last month.
“I don’t even know why he leave the job up to now because he use to work for good money,” the mother said.
The police have not been able to identify Orlando Fredericks’ accomplices.
A post mortem examination is scheduled for today.
