Team Coco’s Hamza Eastman pedaled to victory ahead of teammate Raynauth Jeffrey in the
Ministry of Health (MoH) Caribbean Wellness Day 60-mile cycle road race yesterday from Conversation Tree to Halfway Tree Mahaicony and back to Ocean View International Hotel.
On a sunny and windy afternoon, Eastman and Jeffrey virtually decided the race just minutes after the start as the two pulled away from the main pack and were never caught. Such was the dominance of the duo that they finished moiré than five minutes ahead of the others; Eastman crossed the line in Two Hours 11 minutes 37.38 Seconds. Jeffrey copped seven of the eight prime prizes with the other going to Eastman.
The other top six finishers were Godfrey Pollydore who led a mini sprint to the line ahead of Christopher Holder, Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams and Robin Persaud.
The junior category was won by 2014 National champion Stephan Husbands from Andre Green and Berbician Romello Crawford in that order.
Emerging as the top veteran was National champion Junior Niles who completed the distance (through Old Road, Mahaica, turning back by the Mahaica Police Station) in One Hour 41 Minutes 29.17 Seconds.
Jaikarran Sukhai followed Niles to the line with Mark Sonoram, third. Adrian Sharma was the top mountain biker winning from Charles Ketwaroo and Michael Holder.
Sixty-eight year-old Monty Parris was the lone Over-60 competitor as was Tashwanna Doris, the lone female.
Yesterday’s race was held to observe Caribbean Wellness Day held under the theme, “Warriors on the Move”. Junior Minister of Finance Bishop Juan Edghill was on hand to send the riders on their way and also officiated at the presentation.
Edghill, a supporter of healthy lifestyles congratulated the 33-riders for coming out to make the event the success it was whilst making a call for all Guyana to adopt a healthy lifestyle and not just cyclists and sportsmen and women.
