Almost two days after Guyana Restaurant Inc. opened its second Popeyes franchise at the cost of some US$3M on Camp Street, Georgetown, two gunmen attacked and robbed the fast food outlet on Vlissengen Road on Friday night.
According to the Police, at around 22:15 hrs, two armed men entered the Popeyes Restaurant and escaped with over $1M in cash after they held up the supervisor, 27-year-old Mahendra Persaud.
The police said that no one was injured during the robbery.
Kaieteur News was told that the men tied handkerchiefs over their faces during the five-minute ordeal.
When this newspaper visited the fast food outlet yesterday, a cashier attached to the business place said that she was home at the time of the robbery, but related that her colleagues informed her that the restaurant was empty when the men stormed in.
“My friend (another Popeyes’ worker) said that they didn’t have any customers inside the building, so they were behind the counter talking when two men came in. She said that one of the men waited by the door while the other rushed in and demanded the money,” the staffer said.
According to her, when the money was handed over to the gunman, he demanded more. He eventually escaped with the day’s sales.
It is unclear how they fled from the scene.
“My friend said after the robbery, all of them were scared and shaking, so none of them peep to see how the men escape,” the cashier said.
On February 14, 2010, two armed men robbed the said entity of $1.2M in cash.
According to information, the men on that occasion had entered from the back door, which according to reports, was not secured properly.
The men on that occasion had grabbed two female supervisors and demanded that they hand over the money.
Similarly, on February 29, 2012, two gunmen again entered the fast food outlet and escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash.
Investigations into Friday night’s robbery are ongoing.
