The senior Lands and Survey official who was earlier this year forced into early retirement because of controversial land surveying transactions, has reportedly been retained by other Government departments to do land surveying work on a contractual basis.
This publication was reliably informed that the government is using the services of the official despite his connection to illegal transactions which caused President Donald Ramotar to order an investigation into the matter. The man went off the job some five months ago after being sent on leave to facilitate the investigations.
A senior member of an opposition party had told this newspaper that he was aware of the matter but was seeking physical evidence before bringing the issue to the fore. The opposition member had noted that the man was working in specific areas of the government where his surveying skill is being utilized.
According to information, several members of the Guyana Lands and Survey Commission (GL&SC) had complained to President Ramotar and to Government officials about the Commission losing millions of dollars when the agency’s work was being given out to private contractors. Additionally, the official was being accused of taking kick backs, etc. for work to be conducted.
The President had reportedly ordered private survey work to be cancelled and redone by the agency. One prominent matter was an alleged breach of procedure involving the Santa Fe Mega Farm in the Rupununi where it was claimed that the process of contracting surveying work to a private contractor could cause the agency to lose some $10M.
The matter had allegedly surfaced when an inquiry was made for a particular surveyor. Investigations were held and information involving questionable transactions arose. The official along with subordinate staff had been sent on leave and the official had entered retirement.
When Kaieteur News made contact with the official yesterday, he said he was no longer with the Lands and Survey Commission but that he is conducting limited surveying work at this time. When the publication asked the man whether he had been investigated and if he has been contacted by the government to provide surveying services, he said that he had no idea what the newspaper was talking about.
