A 19-year-old father of one was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged for snatching $200,000 in jewellery from a woman around the Stabroek Market area.
Ricky Lakeram, a porter of Lot 40 Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to respond to a Larceny from the Person charge.
It is alleged that on August 24, last at Croal Street, Georgetown, Lakeram stole two gold chains valued at $200,000 from Vanessa Pierre. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The court heard that around 17:45 hours that day, Pierre, who was wearing the gold chains, was walking along Croal Street when Lakeram walked up to her and snatched the items before running away.
Pierre raised an alarm and the police chased after Lakeram. He was apprehended and the articles were found on him.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant opposed bail citing the nature and gravity of the offence. He added that on Monday the defendant was charged with Break and Enter and Larceny as well as Larceny from the Person. He said in both instances Lakeram was positively identified by the victims.
Meanwhile, the father of one, who had no lawyer, begged the Magistrate for reasonable bail stating that his common law wife will give birth in three months.
He was remanded and the case is set to be called on September 15.
