A taxi driver and a miner were remanded to prison yesterday after they were charged with cornering a woman in Campbellville, Georgetown, and relieving her of over $100,000 worth of items at gunpoint.
Nicholas Brazil of Lot 99 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, and Terry Cromwell of King Edward Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on September 9, last, at Campbellville, they were armed with a gun when they robbed Ashanti Lawrence of her handbag which contained her cellular phone, clothing and $12,000 cash.
The items listed in the charge amounted to $105,500. The duo pleaded not guilty.
The case was prosecuted by Police Inspector, Michael Grant who explained that about 11:30 hours the victim was walking along Enachu Street when she was cornered by the two men. They placed a gun to her head and demanded she hand over her bag.
A frightened Lawrence surrendered her bag and the two men ran away. The woman reported the matter and the duo were later captured. The suspects were later placed on an identification parade during which the victim fingered them as the men who robbed her at gun-point.
Further investigations led to the duo being charged with robbery under arms. The prosecution stated that the articles were not recovered.
Grant objected to bail citing the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. He emphasised that a firearm was used to commit the offence.
Cromwell stated that he was previously convicted on a narcotics charge. The duo was remanded to prison and the case is set to be called again on September 30.
