More than 300 families were yesterday counting their good fortune as they moved
one step closer to realizing the dream of owning their homes through the Ministry of Housing and Water’s annual ‘One stop shop’ exercise at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The house lots which were allocated are located at Providence and were given to families within the middle income, low middle income and the low income groups.
Officials from the Housing Ministry, while addressing the huge gathering, reiterated Government’s pledge to developing and advancing the social development of the country and providing access to basic facilities including housing, education, sanitation, road, water and electricity.
This newspaper was told that the beneficiaries are persons who applied for house lots between 2007 and 2010.
According to Housing Minister, Irfaan Ali, about five more ‘One Stop Shop’ exercises will be carried out during the remainder of the year.
“We are bringing the service of the Ministry out to the people. It is a public and transparent way of allocating house lots,” the Minister said.
He continued, “We have the private sector working with us; the banks, hardware stores and cement companies so that persons can have a comprehensive service delivered to them under one roof.”
The Minister added that the exercise focused mainly on development of the East Bank Demerara.
One beneficiary, Sheila Adams, yesterday told Kaieteur News that she had been waiting for the past six years for a house lot.
“You think it is easy when you are a single mom with three children and have to pay rent? And my salary ain’t big,” Adams said.
Now that she has gotten her house lot, the first thing she will do is start building within the next six months, according to the single mom.
“The hardest part is getting the house lot, and I have that now, and I have an idea about how much to build my house,” the woman emphasized yesterday.
Ronald Blueberry, a Grove, East Bank Demerara resident also received his house lot, after waiting some seven years.
Blueberry, a security guard with four children said, he was more than happy when he received his letter from the Housing Ministry.
“I like what they are doing. They are allowing you to pull your house lot number from a box, at least no one can say they were cheated or so,” Blueberry said.
At the next exercise, persons will continue to receive lots at the Providence location.
