Managing Director of Sanjay’s Jewellery, Bishnarine “Sanjay” Persaud who was behind the wheels of the sports car
which killed a Mayor and City Council (M&CC) handyman in a midnight crash, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Persaud was granted $1.5M bail after appearing briefly before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning.
Fifty five year-old Leon Hunte, of Stone Avenue, Blygezight, Georgetown, was killed on Lamaha Street, during the accident which occurred on Wednesday.
Hunte was said to be riding his bicycle when he was struck from behind by a sports car and pitched some distance away. Reports are that when the ambulance arrived on the scene, the handyman was already dead.
The businessman also received injuries during the accident and was rushed to the Woodlands Hospital where he was treated. Shortly after being discharged, Persaud was taken before the courts to face the charge.
He is accused of driving in a manner dangerous to the public, while piloting motorcar PKK 5501 on September 10, last at Lamaha Street, Newtown-Kitty, Georgetown, thereby causing the death of Hunte.
Persaud denied the charge, and submitted an application for bail through Glen Hanoman, his lawyer.
Hanoman asked the court to offer bail to his client, the proprietor of the Sheriff Street, jewellery store. He said that the 39-year-old had to be taken to the hospital because of the injuries he had sustained.
Hanoman noted that after Persaud discharged himself from hospital he surrendered to the Kitty Police Station to assist in the probe. He insisted that this was a clear indication that the businessman would willingly present himself to the necessary authorities should bail be granted.
The attorney said his client was not a flight risk and was in possession of a medical certificate that states the injuries he sustained. The lawyer said, Persaud requires further medical care and has to return to hospital for a CT scan.
His bail application did not meet with objections from Prosecutor, Sergeant Vishnu Hunt who requested three weeks for statements to be filed.
The presiding Magistrate initially granted bail in the sum of $2M but it was reduced after the defence lawyer told the court that Persaud, a father of two, was saddled with medical expenses, repairs and assistance to the family of the deceased including funeral expenses.
The businessman was ordered to return to court on October 3 for statements.
