DEAR EDITOR,
I knew from the beginning that the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry (COI) would have been used for political gain and was possibly designed to whip up bitterness against the People’s National Congress (PNC). It now appears to be the worst form of electioneering by the PPP administration.
The PPP/C’s press briefing on Friday September 5, 2014 at Freedom House, confirmed the fact that the COI is more about politics than bringing a public closure to the circumstances surrounding the demise of Dr. Rodney
I noted with deep concern a particular statement.
“If anybody is behaving like a ‘cornered rat’ it is David Granger who it was revealed by the Commission of Inquiry into the assassination of Dr. Walter Rodney was the Commander of the Army when the high powered weapons which later coincidentally or deliberately found their way into the hands of criminals in 2005.”
That was the assertion of the General Secretary of the PPP, Mr. Clement Rohee, in response to the Opposition Leader, the Hon. Brigadier David Granger accusing the PPP administration of behaving like a ‘cornered rat’ as they could not provide proof to support their claim that GECOM Preliminary List of Electors (PLE) is flawed.
It is clear this Government is using the ongoing COI for political gain and to tarnish image of the PNC and people like Brigadier Granger, ahead of possible elections.
Actually, I could not understand why it is that the ruling party is accusing the PNC Government indirectly for the death of Dr Walter Rodney when there is no piece of evidence to link the party or any past or present members of that party to Dr. Rodney’s death. I am convinced, like many others in our society, that if the PNC had something to hide from the nation they would never have supported or even called for an internationally-supported probe into Rodney’s death or even take part in the COI. It is time that this disgraceful government desists from using it for political gain.
