What will it take to separate the teams, a special performance from either Captain Narsingh Deonarine or
Christopher Barnwell, a spectacular catch, a brilliant innings or an impressive bowling performance? Last year they were declared joint winners after the scores were tied and fans are eagerly waiting to see who will be crowned champions when Berbice tackle arch rivals Demerara in the final of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior Inter County 50 –over tournament today at Albion.
Berbice will have home advantage but Demerara have outplayed every team in the preliminary rounds to remain the only side so far and will be hard pressed to overcome.
The fact that this is another chance for the players to stake a claim for a national team pick makes the contest even more exciting. Deonarine’s men would want to give their supporters much to cheer about, while on the other hand, the Christopher Barnwell led unit will look to maintain their unbeaten streak.
Both teams are well balanced, but credit must be given to Demerara who have displayed good all round skills. Demerara openers Trevon Griffith and Andrew Lyght Jnr have provided bright starts and will look to impress the selectors once again. The middle order is strong with the likes of Rajendra Chandrika, Barnwell, Robin Bacchus, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Steven Jacobs and Shemroy Barrington, while the bowling attack is a decent one which includes Jacobs, Paul Wintz, Seon Daniels, Zaheer Mohamed and Amir Khan.
It will be interesting to see who will partner Kandsammy Surujnarine at the top of the order for the home team. Nevertheless Deonarine, Jonathan Foo, Devon Clements, Rajiv Ivan and Seon Hetmyer will look for a bright start to build on. Veerasammy Permaul, Keon Joseph, Raun Johnson, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai and Clements will take care of the bowling department. A keen contest is anticipated when the action gets under way at 09:00 hrs.
