A 49-year-old man perished at around 22.25 hrs on Thursday, after a fire of unknown origin
destroyed the No 3 Village, West Coast Berbice, house in which he had lived alone.
The victim, identified as Fazim Alli, was said to be an alcoholic who would walk the streets and “talk to himself.”
He also smoked heavily and investigators suggested that a burning cigarette caused the blaze.
Alli’s remains were only removed at around midday yesterday.
Family members said that the blaze started around 22:00 hrs. The dead man’s sister-in-law said, relatives were unaware that Alli was in the house, since he was seen heading for Bath Settlement, some hours before the fire started.
Neighbours reportedly last saw Alli at around 16:30 hours in an intoxicated state. Later in the evening, they reportedly saw smoke and flames coming from the wooden house and alerted Alli’s brother, who, along with other relatives and residents tried in vain to douse the flames.
Residents stated that the fire service arrived at about 23:00 hrs, but by then the entire building was already badly burnt. They described Alli as being a friendly person despite being an alcoholic.
The body is currently at the Anthony’s Funeral Parlor, West Coast Berbice.
