A 24-year-old man accused of trespassing in another man’s yard and stealing two pairs of slippers was remanded to prison when he appeared in court yesterday.
Reynold Charles who is also known as ‘Michael Charles’ and ‘Ryan Matthews’ of Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown, was taken before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to respond to charges of simple larceny and vagrancy.
The Court heard that Charles stole two slippers valued $20,000, property of Edward Hamid on September 6, last at Alexander Street, Kitty. It is alleged too, that he was found loitering in Hamid’s yard at Alexander Street and could not have given a reasonable explanation for being there.
Charles admitted to being in the yard, but denied stealing the footwear. He explained that he was attacked by two men, so he decided to run into the yard. Based on his explanation, the Chief Magistrate recorded a not guilty plea on his behalf.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Michael Grant opposed bail stating that Charles had been convicted for other similar offences. He revealed that the defendant only came out of prison last Monday and is presently charged with vagrancy.
The unrepresented man claimed however, that he is a father of a two-year-old child, who is his only reason for living. Charles said that he had just left prison and is trying to turn around his life.
The Magistrate, in response, refused bail. The matter was transferred and the case is set to be called again on September 16 before Magistrate Dylon Bess.
