Following his visit to the three Municipal Markets on Wednesday, the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker, has begun to answer the stallholders’ calls for better infrastructure at the facilities.
Albouystown, Bourda and Stabroek Markets will benefit under the “Clean-Up My Country” exercise – the Central Government’s much-publicized programme.
At a press conference held at his Ministry on Monday, Whittaker informed the gathering that after meeting with the Municipal Market vendors, his Ministry is ready to create a better environment for them to sell their products.
He said that under the “Market Infrastructure Programme”, internal and external drains of the markets will be de-silted, subsequently improving the drainage systems. He added that the Ministry will repair damaged street lights and install new units where necessary, in an effort to improve visibility and security at nights.
As it relates to the disposal of solid waste, Whittaker said that the Ministry is in the process of procuring storage facilities, which will be placed at multiple locations in the markets. For the Albouystown Market, Whittaker noted that a tarmac will be constructed and fenced for vendors to secure their stalls when not in use.
When the Minister visited the markets, vendors expressed their concerns about issues which were causing them discomfort and inconvenience on a daily basis. These included poor drainage facilities, inadequate electrical installation and lack of proper security which has led to the upsurge in criminal activities within the market environs; inadequate sanitary facilities and poor roofing conditions.
The stallholders cited that leakages in the roof were a major contributor to flooding in the market. They asserted that the poor/inadequate infrastructure has cost them millions of dollars in damaged goods over the years.
Whittaker assured the vendors that the Government had provided resources to improve the environment and aesthetics of the City of Georgetown, and work will soon commence in the Municipal Markets.
