– Businessman avoids breathalyzer test
Up to press time, a popular city businessman had not been administered a breathalyzer test even though he was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol when the vehicle he was driving, struck and killed a Mayor and City Council (M&CC) worker.
Dead is 55-year-old Leon Hunte of Lot 63 Stone Avenue, Blygezigt, East Coast Demerara.
According to information received, Hunte, a handyman, was heading home on his bicycle around 23:00 hrs on Wednesday when the vehicle collided with him at Lamaha and Middleton Streets, Georgetown.
There are reports that the allegedly drunk businessman who struck and killed the mute and deaf handyman, got himself admitted into a private room at a city hospital to avoid taking a breathalyzer test.
When this newspaper contacted a senior police official for a comment yesterday, he said that once someone is admitted into a private room at a hospital, it is up to the doctor to say when they would be ready to speak to the police.
He further related that police ranks visited the man at the hospital twice yesterday in an effort to take a statement, but were not allowed to meet with him.
Meanwhile, Ronald Babb, a relative of the dead man, said that he was sleeping when he received a telephone call that Hunte was involved in an accident.
“When I went there, I see they remove his body from under the car and took him away,” Babb related.
He added that Hunte, who would have celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, took a few days leave from work.
“He doesn’t drink or smoke. I don’t know if he went by some girlfriend or what,” Babb told this newspaper.
He added that Hunte, who had been living with him for the past 16 years, has no children or any other relative.
According to Babb, Hunte spent his time at work and at home. “He was not a bad person. He never troubled anyone or did anything.”
