One person was killed Wednesday afternoon and eight others injured after they were involved in an
accident in the interior.
Dead is Zakeer Mohamed of Leguan Island, while among the eight injured are driver Lester Baker of Linden and miner Derrick Sinclair. Sinclair received a broken right ankle.
According to reports, the truck was transporting cows and 10 passengers around 15:00 hours in the Buck Hall, Waini Road, Region One when the incident occurred.
Information reaching this newspaper is that the truck, GRR 2645, rolled down the hill as the driver struggled to find the right gear causing the truck’s engine to cut off. The vehicle turned over in the process.
The truck was heading for a known mining area.
The injured were assisted by workers of Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC). There were transported to Buck Hall thence to the Suddie Hospital, Essequibo Coast.
Police said that Mohamed, 52, was in the tray of the motor lorry when it turned turtle while ascending a hill at 51 Miles, Buck Hall, Essequibo.
The driver is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
