– Haniffs, Isaacs, Reid, McPherson, Andrews win titles
The annual Hilbert “Beef” Humphrey Memorial Summer Tennis programme came to an end recently with the playing off of a back to school Competition at the Republic Bank Court, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The tournament which was conducted by National Lawn Tennis Champion Carol Humphrey saw each participant receive a medal, while the winners of the three categories were also rewarded. Trophies were also presented to the Most Improved Player and the Most Valuable Player of the Programme.
The competition saw play in the 10 & under, 12 & under and open age group categories. In the 10 and under girl’s category, Enyce Haniff triumphed by first defeating Monifa Da Silva 10-5 in the semifinal, before returning to beat Beneshia Blair 10-6 in the final.
In the boys 10 and under division Jaron Erskine got past Xavio Isaacs 10-5 in the semifinal match up then won from Azad Edwards 10-8 in the final. The U 12 division saw Aviva Reid defeat Shirisa Da Silva 10-8, before winning the final against Kayla Richards 10-8.
The boysU12 category was won by Jahuan Haniff who defeated Jaheim Hutson 10-4 and Jafari Adams 10-5 in the final. In the open category, the winner of the female competition was Toquana McPherson who defeated Reniska James (2-0) 4-2, 5-3 in the final. She had earlier won from Maryann Sinclair (2-0) winning 4-2, 4-1.
The male open winner was Jardan Andrews who first took care of Edron Stephen (2-0) 4-2, 4-2 in their semi game, before winning from Daniel Narsaiah (2-0) 5-3, 5-3 in the final.
Akira Wade was adjudged the most valuable player of the programme, while Aviva Reid was adjudged the most improved player. Participant also received school supplies.
Coordinator Ms. Carol Humphrey expressed her heartfelt appreciation to all the sponsors, parents and persons who contributed to the success of the programme. She had special words of commendation for Gordon’s and Friends Foundation for the school supplies. (S. Whyte)
