The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) will be hosting the Caribbean Association of Fire Fighters Executive Meeting and Caribbean Fire Fighters Goodwill Games from October 20-25. At least seven Caribbean countries are expected to participate in the event which will have up for discussions the formation of a Fire Fighters Association in Guyana
According to a public notice, the meeting of fire service executives will be held at the Regency Suites Hotel. The two-day meeting is expected to examine a number of critical issues relative to firefighting and the welfare of firefighters in the Caribbean, including the programmes and activities of the Caribbean Fire Fighters Association. They are expected to discuss also the formation of a Fire Fighters Association in Guyana and the resuscitation of the Exchange Training programme among Caribbean Territories.
On October 24, the country will host the Caribbean Fire Fighters Goodwill Games from 09: 00 hours at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, Georgetown. Organizers of the Goodwill Games commented that the hosting of this aspect of the events “is a first for Guyana” and will see a day of exciting sporting activities.
Outside of that, participants from the seven Caribbean regions will be treated to the country’s natural beauty. “The delegations will be given the opportunity to see the beauty of our beloved country Guyana, via several tours organized by the Guyana Fire Service, followed by a football match,” organizers of the event said.
Over 62 athletes are expected from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua, Martinique, Dominica, French Guiana and the British Virgin Islands. Suriname however pulled out of the games, after they were put on high alert since the same period at which the games will be held is also the driest in that country.
Participants will begin to arrive in Guyana by October 19. The events will culminate with a cocktail reception on Saturday 25th October.
Head of the Guyana Fire Service Marlon Gentle had told Kaieteur News that the agency was making significant strides with its development. This includes the construction of new fire stations. The newest station currently being built will be completed next year. The Fire Service is currently accepting applications for persons seeking to join the organization.
