Guyana’s largest bakery, Bakewell, has sponsored the first ever ‘Bakewell Junior Tennis Tournament’ that will serve off tomorrow at the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue and Camp Streets, Thomas Lands, Georgetown.
The Opening Ceremony for the tournament will be conducted at the National Racquet Centre at 17:00hrs today. The categories to be contested are Under-12, 14 and 18 boys and girls. Matches will run off for three consecutive weekends at the Racquet Centre, the National Park and the President’s College tennis facilities starting tomorrow morning at 08:00hrs.
The President’s College tennis court was financed by the Nasir & Nasir Food Group during 2012 as one of the initiatives of its Founders, the late Naeem Nasir and wife Annetta Nasir, to introduce healthy recreational activities into the school. The company has always supported tennis with a passion that has never dimmed.
President of the Guyana Tennis Association, Grace McCalman at the presentation held on Wednesday afternoon at the Roti Hut Facility in North Road said that Bakewell has generally been one of the major sponsors of tennis in Guyana for a number of years now, and the company has played a major role in the development of the country’s young tennis players some of whom are now eligible for tennis scholarships.
She also reflected on playing with the late Naeem Nasir who was known to enjoy playing tennis for a number of years before his demise two years ago. He was a good doubles player and also a founding member of the Le Ressouvenir Tennis Club.
The company’s CEO Rajin Ganga has committed to making this tournament an annual one, and indicated that Bakewell shares a number of key values with the sport of tennis, both in its daily business and in its sponsoring of activities, as they strive to place people at the heart of everything they do.
Ganga noted the loyalty that Bakewell has shown to the sport clearly reflects the kind of relationship which the Food Group is determined to forge with its clients. His focus remains on exposing young players who show potential to emerge as champions and helping them to develop.
