Eager to reverse last year’s results when Guyana was on course to take gold in both the junior and juvenile categories but that changed due to unforeseen circumstances, the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) has named a strong six-member team to compete at the 9th Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships set for Parimaribo, Suriname, October 4-5, next.
GCF President Cheryl Thompson disclosed that while mechanical problems hampered her riders last year they are leaving no stones unturned to ensure that this talented bunch of riders do their country proud.
This year’s National Junior Champion Stephano Husbands will headline the junior selectees that also include last year’s Caribbean silver and bronze medalist’s Akeem Arthur and Michael Anthony with Alanzo Ambrose closing out this list.
National juvenile champion Andrew Hicks will partner with Raphael Leung in this category as they seek to out pedal their counterparts from the rest of the region.
All the above riders have been very active on the road and in the National Park so that leg hours would not be an issue for them according to Thompson. Anthony, Husbands, Ambrose and Leung have been consistently competing against their senior counterparts and this is a positive for the local contingent.
Last year’s lone juvenile (pre-junior) competitor at the Caribbean championships was on the short-list but it is reported that he left Guyana foe about two months without notifying the GCF and this worked against him in being considered for selection.
Even without Crawford, the Guyana team is a very formidable and talented bunch with lots expected of them. This event is run by the Caribbean Cycling Federation.
