The cane-cutter who was severely burnt in a “freak accident” on Sunday, at his Patentia Squatting Area residence, West Bank Demerara, succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Tuesday.
Emanuel Ramdoo, the father of three who had sustained first degree burns to almost his entire body, died in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
Ramdoo, 34, had sustained burns about his body when his one-bedroom apartment went up in flames around 09:30 hrs on Sunday.
While neighbours suggested that the cane-cutter may have burnt himself, his mother, Gita Lakeram, insisted that her son was not depressed and that the fire was nothing but a mishap.
The woman said that while going to the hospital in an ambulance on Sunday, her son had told her that he lit his kerosene-stove and it accidently fell on him.
“The stove deh on a shelf which is high and he had a ‘hang-over’ because he went to a wedding the night before, so like he hand jam something and the stove fall on he and kero pitch all over,” Lakeram noted.
At the scene, neighbours who rescued Ramdoo, when they entered his home from which heavy smoke was emanating, said they found that he had already become a “human torch.” They immediately doused him with trench water in an effort to save his life.
The neighbours told this newspaper that the man may have burnt himself, because he was depressed since his wife severed ties with him some three years ago.
They claimed that after the separation the cane-cutter frequently consumed alcohol, and recalled episodes where the man would cry loudly for his wife and would display suicidal behaviour whenever intoxicated.
After discovering his mattress was completely burnt in the house, residents of the area were confident that Ramdoo had set himself ablaze on his bed, and then stumbled into the kitchen.
However, Lakeram said that she did not receive an explanation from her son concerning his burnt mattress, but was confident that he did not attempt suicide. The devastated mother insisted that the allegations made by the neighbours were false, as her son parted with his wife three years ago, and would have committed suicide over his ex-wife much earlier, if that was his intention.
Ramdoo leaves to mourn his three children, siblings and mother.
