All the top cyclists in Guyana are expected to throng to Berbice on Saturday September 20th as preparations have begun for the Irene Benjamin 75th birth anniversary cycle road race.
The race is being sponsored by the former national cycling champion and overseas based Guyanese, Wilbert Benjamin and is being organised by the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC). Benjamin who now resides in Canada is expected home shortly to finalise arrangements for the event.
The race is open to all cyclists in the country and is expected to be a 60-mile affair in different categories. The main event is expected to pedal off from in front of the Benjamin Sports Store at Fyrish Village Corentyne and proceed to No 66 Village and back to the starting point. The veteran riders are expected to turn back in-front of Nand Persaud and Company Limited, covering a distance of 50 miles.
Female cyclists and mountain bike riders will start from Rose Hall Town and ride to the finish line covering a distance of four miles, while BMX riders will match pedals from Albion to the finishing line covering a distance of three miles.
Eight sprint points’ prizes are up for grabs. The winning cyclist is expected to race away with a sumptuous $75,000, trophies and other goodies.
Mrs. Benjamin and members of her family are expected to be on hand to send the riders on their way and help with the presentation and distribution of prizes.
All the top cyclists in the country are expected to participate in their quest to get their hands on the sumptuous giveaways.
On Tuesday supervisor of the Benjamin Sports Store Ophelia Bender handed over the sponsorship sum to race coordinator Randolph Roberts at simple presentation held at the store.
Benjamin still rides in his adopted homeland and would still compete whenever he is home.
This is the third event sponsored by the family so far for the year. The race will be coordinated by Coach Randolph Roberts.
